What a blockbuster this one is! Hugo Friedhofer releases are far too rare and this CD features two of his most epic scores.
Seven Cities of Gold (1955) headlines this release. Richard Egan, Anthony Quinn, Michael Rennie, Jeffrey Hunter and Rita Moreno lead the cast in a story of a 1769 Spanish expedition to find the legendary seven cities in California containing buried Indian gold.
Friedhofer's score is a thrilling, Spanish-flavored masterpiece.
Rounding out our CD are four cues containing the nearly 15 minutes of music that survives from the Twentieth Century Fox's 1955 The Rains of Ranchipur. Lana Turner, Richard Burton, Fred MacMurray and, once again, Michael Rennie, star in this story that takes place in the rain-soaked countryside of India as the lives and loves of the characters are tested against the natural disasters of monsoon, earthquake and flood.
Friedhofer's score here is passionate and exotic. A sumptuous work! Luckily, the film's spectacular Main Title was among the cues we could rescue.
An historic release if ever there was one!
