Composer Jorge Arriagada, who is best known for his scores for Our Lady of the Assassins, Le Temps retrouvé and Comedy of Innocence, has written a very interesting and beautiful score for fellow Chilean director Raoul Ruiz's biopic about famous Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, portrayed by John Malkovich. Evoking the music of 1920's Vienna, the score features influences from classical composers such as Mahler, Schubert, Strauss, Berg and Schönberg, performed with great flair by the Sinfonia of London. The music "strives to convey the morale and aesthetics of 1900 to the audience in order to revive the spirit of this fundamental painter," says the composer, who himself studied under a protegé of the Vienesse music school, Max Deutsch.
Our album features an interesting and compelling collection of new original compositions written for Klimt, music with a sense of authenticity so strong that it could have been the work of the composers it pays homage to. The film was nominated to the Golden St. George Award at the 2006 Moscow International Film Festival and co-stars Saffron Burrows and Veronica Ferres. It was released on DVD in the USA on January 8, 2008.
