What a special recording The Black Cauldron was. The day before the film opened in 1985, Elmer Bernstein and producer George Korngold went into the studio in Salt Lake City with the Utah Symphony Orchestra to make a new recording of highlights from Elmer's epic score. This used to happen all the time. The original soundtrack albums for so many scores, including Elmer's The Great Escape and Hawaii, were not the actual soundtrack recordings heard in the film. They were studio recordings. The recording they produced in Utah is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Bernstein showed what he could do with animation when he took on Heavy Metal in 1981. That score was magnificent. When it was announced that Elmer Bernstein would be the composer for Walt Disney's The Black Cauldron, there was tremendous excitement, and he did not disappoint. A powerful, beautiful, soaring score, loaded with themes. The Black Cauldron is a towering achievement in fantasy scoring.
This album has been out of print for years. We included a number of cues in our 6-CD package of 1985 At The Movies, but the complete album has been unavailable for decades. We've received a lot of mail about this one and we are so excited to see this classic return for a new generation.
Fantasy, magic, and fun are all brewed together in Disney's legendary adventure The Black Cauldron. Whoever releases the mysterious Black Cauldron's power will be invincible! The fearsome Horned King will do anything to possess it, but he is challenged by the most unlikely adversary: a young assistant pig keeper named Taran, who dreams of doing heroic deeds. With a motley team of the brave Princess Eilonwy, a minstrel named Fflewddur Fflam and Hen Wen, a remarkable pig who can predict the future, Taran embarks on a quest to stop the Black Cauldron's evil once and for all. Will he have the courage to succeed?
